California now has the nation’s strictest protection of students’ privacy rights. The bill known as SB1177 was signed into law on Monday by Gov. Jerry Brown. The law prohibits companies from selling students’ personal information for profit.
The law also makes companies who gather student information through high school or elementary school websites, online applications and others services responsible for protecting the data they gather, according to a report from the newsobserver.com. Companies are banned from selling data to advertisers and other third parties.
Brown also approved a related bill that says student information collected by outside companies remains the property of the school.
