California School Upgrades Security Measures After Attack on Student

Published: July 22, 2008

OXNARD, Calif. – In response to a shooting that took place in February 2008 at E.O. Green Junior High, a grand jury has ruled that a police officer must be present at all schools in Ventura County. Additionally, all gates on the campuses must be locked.

According to the Country Star, the new security policies are a result of a survey completed by 25 middle school principals in the area.

On Feb. 12, Brandon McInerney, 14, brought a gun to school and shot Lawrence King, 15, after King asked the student to be his valentine, according to school officials. McInerney has been charged with first-degree murder and a hate crime. Gay activists requested that McInerney be charged as a minor.
