California Enacts Cyber-Bullying Law in Schools

A new California law targets cyber-bullies by allowing schools to suspend or expel students caught in the act. The new law also singles out such harassment as a subject to be addressed by school officials.

Most cyber-bullying laws are directed at school districts and require them to develop policies on the infraction. Arkansas, Delaware, Idaho, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, New Jersey, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Carolina and Washington have already passed similar laws.

The California law, however, is receiving skepticism from critics who argue for protecting students’ free speech rights.
