Calif. School District Budget Cuts Result in 32 SROs Losing Jobs

CHULA VISTA, Calif. – As a result of budget cuts for the Sweetwater Union High School District, 32 school resource officers’ jobs were cut.

Eliminating the officers’ jobs will save the district approximately $300,000 in 2009. However, the cuts will only leave 21 officers to monitor the city of Chula Vista, the Sweetwater district and the Chula Vista Elementary School District. At this time the elementary school district does not plan on eliminating campus police from their campuses.

As for Sweetwater, campus assistants who do not have any affiliation with law enforcement or police training will take the place of school resource officers.
