Two teenagers in California were arrested after a school resource officer heard rumors of a school shooting plot Wednesday.

The 16-year-old suspects were students at Troy High School in Fullerton, California.

A classmate told the SRO about a conversation he overheard the suspects having about carrying out an attack at a school athletic event.

The suspects allegedly discussed the types of firearms they would use and said they wanted the shooting to be “bigger than Columbine,” according to ktla.com.

“The person that reported this incident to law enforcement, whether something did happen, didn’t happen, this person saved countless lives,” Fullerton Police Sergeant Jon Radus said. “Countless heartache for an unknown number of families.”

After the SRO received the tip, officials with Troy High School and the Fullerton Joint Union School District identified the students and police took them into custody.

During the investigation, police found evidence that the students had looked up details on past school shootings on the internet.

The students were charged with making criminal threats and conspiracy to commit a felony and have been placed in the custody of Orange County Juvenile Hall.

Police continue to investigate the incident.
