Following a shooting at Taft Union High, the Taft Union High School District has filed a lawsuit against the city of Taft, Calif.
On the morning of Jan. 10, 2013, Bryan Oliver brought a shotgun to school and opened fired on a classroom, injuring his classmate. The lawsuit claims that the shooting wouldn’t have occurred if the city had a police officer on duty that day, The Bakersfield Californian reports.
School Resource Officer Doug Hallmark, who works for the Taft Police Department, did not show for work that day due to road closures related to ice and snow. The department said the only way to fill in for an officer who can’t make it to campus is to take a city police officer off patrol.
A teacher, Ryan Heber and school counselor, Kim Lee Fields, were able to talk to the suspect and convince him to give up his weapon.
