Cal State Fullerton Protests Intolerance

Published: November 19, 2007

FULLERTON, Calif. – Nooses were found on the campus of California State University Fullerton at a tolerance event Nov. 7. The act has outraged students and faculty alike.

The incident prompted a rally against hate Nov. 14. The prior week, nooses had been tied to a display of T-shirts condemning intolerance.

Police are investigating the event and labeled it as “somewhat offensive” act but not a hate crime. Campus police Lt. Fred Molina said the act wasn’t directed to a particular group and the act was committed in a freedom of speech area. He added that campus police are trying to figure out who is performing the acts and the reasoning behind it.

Two days after the episode, a campus-wide E-mail was sent out denouncing the act.

The rally began with a silent protest. The students wore bright orange clothing and black armbands, and then hung peace signs from the area where the nooses were placed. The rally was followed by an open mic hour, where student and faculty leaders discussed hatred, followed by a two-hour panel discussion in the Student Union.
