Meet Campus Safety’s 2 New Bloggers

LOS ANGELES— Campus Safety magazine is pleased to announce that it has two new columnists/bloggers who will be providing expert insight on college campus emergency management, security technology and public safety best practices.

UCLA Emergency Management Office Director and Higher Education Consultant David Burns has more than 30 years experience in public safety. He served as a 9-1-1 dispatcher and first responder (paramedic operations manager) in Oakland, Calif., for 10 years, working six days at the Cypress “880” freeway collapse during the Loma Prieta Oakland “World Series” earthquake in October 1989. Burns served nine years in EMS Administration as a regional disaster planner, and 11 years working as a full-time emergency manager for a municipal fire department in Los Angeles County. The past four years he has served with UCLA.

Burns is a subject matter expert in mass casualty incident management, emergency notification systems, comprehensive plan development, emergency organization, EOC design, function and operation, crisis communications, threat and vulnerability assessment, disaster recovery, grant administration, and auditing.

James L. Grayson is a senior security consultant with Hughes Associates Inc. His career spans more than 35 years in law enforcement and security consulting. He worked for UCLA on a workplace violence study involving hospitals, schools and small retail environments and consulted with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) on a retail violence prevention study.

Grayson’s diverse project experience includes schools, universities, hospitals, municipal buildings, high-rise structures and downtown revitalization projects. He holds a degree in criminal justice and a CPP security management credential from ASIS. He is a nationally recognized speaker and trainer on a wide range of security topics.
