LEWISBURG, Pa. – Bucknell University’s board of trustees has approved arming 15 public safety officers with firearms.
Since April 2007’s Virginia Tech shooting, arming officers has been the subject of an ongoing debate between the trustees, according to President Brian C. Mitchell.
On Jan. 25, the trustees approved arming the officers contingent on the development of plans for training, budget and identifying the capacity and type of operation that will best serve students, faculty and staff.
During the transition, the trustees will offer a public forum. Assistance from outside experts will also be necessary during the process to discuss the potential use of lethal force should such a crisis occur.
According to Mitchell, the campus’ reaction to the news has been positive. He adds that the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education has authorized all of its schools to maintain an armed security force.
Officers may start carrying firearms by August.
