PROVIDENCE, R.I. – In a move to ensure student safety, Brown University’s 33 sworn campus police officers will now be armed with semiautomatic pistols.
The move is in response to recommendations made in 2002 that Brown police carry firearms. The report, which was authored by current Los Angeles Police Department Chief William Bratton, concluded that the university’s officers would need to expand their roles in order to fight crime more effectively.
According to campus officials, all of the officers who now carry guns have completed 160 hours of extra training on use-of-force, weapons use and conflict resolution. Additionally, all have undergone background checks.
