UPDATE: Shooting Prompts Lockdown at Santa Monica College, Gunman in Custody

UPDATE: NBC Los Angeles reports that the person believe to be the gunman is now in custody. Witnesses saw the unidentified suspect, who was fully armed, open fire on cares and a bus, according to the California Highway Patrol. The suspect has since been shot and taken to a local hospital, according to Santa Monica police.


SANTA MONICA, Calif. — A shooting in the library at Santa Monica College (SMC) led officials to place the campus on lockdown Friday.

The shooting occurred shortly after noon. It is unclear how many shots were fired or where the shooting took place. One suspect was down on campus, according to local police, and as many as three victims were reportedly found in a vehicle nearby the campus, ABC 7 reports.

Some reports noted that a campus employee heard dozens of gunshots and saw students, who are currently taking final exams, seeking areas of safety, CBS Los Angeles reports.

The Secret Service has been alerted, as President Barack Obama is at a luncheon fundraiser for the Democratic National Committee about a 10-minute drive away from the shooting incident.
