BOSTON, A Boston city councilor has proposed that area colleges and universities be required to pay $100 per student per semester for police overtime costs during Red Sox games.
City Councilor-at-Large Stephen Murphy estimates that 80 percent of the rioters following the Boston Red Sox’s pennant victory last October were college students. The riots resulted in several injuries, as well as the death of a student, and led to an increased police presence at subsequent games.
According to Murphy, the increased security and overtime cost taxpayers approximately $500,000.
Murphy also proposed that the Red Sox help pay for the increases.
