JOPLIN, Mo. — A bond issue allowing the Joplin School District to rebuild the schools destroyed by a tornado on May 22 passed by less than 1% Tuesday.
If the bond had not passed, the district would not have been able to afford to rebuild Joplin High School and community storm shelters, according to officials. The district would have moved forward with East Middle School, which would be relocated to a site donated by Mercy Health Systems, The Joplin Globe reports.
The estimated rebuilding cost for all the schools and other associated projects is $185 million. Total estimated insurance, government funding and donations currently amount to $123 million.
