SAN DIEGO – Police investigated a bomb threat Dec. 6 on the University of California at San Diego (UCSD) campus.
On Dec. 5, university officials received a threatening phone call in the mid-morning targeting the Leichtag Family Foundation Biomedical Research Building. At around 10:30 a.m., the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department found a suspicious looking device on the first floor of the building.
Authorities immediately evacuated the building, along with seven others surrounding the area and called a bomb squad. Police did not offer a description of the device.
A UCSD spokeswoman said approximately 300 people evacuated the buildings. Authorities also shut down Gilman Drive, a street that extends onto the campus from the neighborhood.
An X-Ray machine determined that the device was innocuous in the afternoon. The explosives team then swept other floors in the building to conclude if there were any other hazardous items or materials.
The FBI and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department’s Explosive Device Team are investigating the incident.
