John Ojeisekhoba Sr., Associate Vice President and Chief of Campus Safety at Biola University, has died from apparent cardiac arrest, university officials announced Monday. He was 54.

Ojeisekhoba had recently been appointed president of the California College and University Police Chiefs Association (CCUPCA), marking the culmination of a distinguished career in campus safety leadership that spanned 25 years at Biola University.

CCUPCA represents police chiefs and safety directors at colleges and universities throughout California, coordinating policy development and best practices across the state’s higher education institutions.

Ojeisekhoba’s selection as CCUPCA president followed his tenure as president of the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators (IACLEA) in 2024, demonstrating his influence at both state and national levels of campus safety leadership.

Ojeisekhoba’ s Career at Biola University

Ojeisekhoba joined Biola as a Campus Safety officer in 2000 after completing his undergraduate studies and competing on the university’s track and field team as a long jumper starting in 1996. He earned a master’s degree in intercultural studies in 2000 and a master’s degree in organizational leadership in 2004.

The university promoted him to Chief of Campus Safety in 2009 and appointed him to his most recent position as Associate Vice President and Chief of Campus Safety in 2019.

“Never have I served alongside a leader more respected, recognized and responsible than John Ojeisekhoba,” said Biola University President Barry H. Corey. “He is regarded on our campus, across the nation and around the world not only as a paragon of college safety professionalism but also as a man who embodies the grace and convictions of our shared faith community.”

Professional Recognition and Background

Campus Safety Magazine was the first organization to recognize his accomplishments in university public safety and security, naming him “Campus Safety Director of the Year” in 2015. Over the following decade, Ojeisekhoba’s contributions to the campus safety community were numerous.

The Department of Homeland Security appointed Ojeisekhoba to the Homeland Security Academic Partnership Council (HSAPC) in 2025. The Veterans of Foreign Wars named him Law Enforcement Officer of the Year in 2024.

Additional recognitions included the Community Spotlight Award from the city of La Mirada in 2025 and the Achievers Award from the Southern California chapter of the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives in 2021.

Born in Nigeria as one of 19 children, Ojeisekhoba immigrated to the United States in 1996 to pursue higher education and athletics. His father served as a police chief in Nigeria.

Beyond his administrative duties, Ojeisekhoba taught self-defense classes as an adjunct professor at Biola since 2003 and served as a reserve police officer with the Garden Grove Police Department. He consulted for universities and organizations nationwide on campus safety and emergency preparedness.

Randy Chung to Serve as Interim Chief of Campus Safety

Randy Chung, assistant chief of Campus Safety who has served under Ojeisekhoba’s leadership since 2008, will serve as Interim Chief of Campus Safety. Chung will oversee the Campus Safety team of 25 staff members.

Biola University will fly flags at half-staff in honor of Ojeisekhoba’s service as a uniformed officer. The university will announce memorial service arrangements in the coming days.

Ojeisekhoba is survived by his wife of 25 years and five children. The family has requested that donations be made to a memorial fund that will be established rather than sending flowers.
