Ball Memorial Hospital to Start Police Department

Published: March 17, 2014

MUNCIE, Ind. – Indiana University (IU) Health Ball Memorial Hospital (BMH) will develop its own independent police department.

The IU Health BMH Police Department, which takes effect April 3, was made possible due to Indiana Senate Bill 582, The Star Press reports.

Authored by Sen. Dennis Kruse, the bill allows the governing board of a county hospital, hospital corporation, municipal hospital or private hospital to establish a hospital police department.
As a requirement, all officers must attend the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, undergo a psychological evaluation and undergo a national criminal background check.

The advantage to having an independent police department on the hospital campus is that all officers will receive the same training, according to BMH officials. Additionally, the facility will not drain other local police departments.

The hospital currently has 37 part-time, sworn-in law enforcement officers. It is unclear how many full-time positions are being made available, but five officers will work the day shift and at least four officers will work afternoon and night shifts.
