Baby Abductions Prompt Security Upgrade at Newark University Hospital
NEWARK, N.J., The abduction of two babies from Newark’s University Hospital in June has prompted hospital trustees to approve an emergency contract allowing for the purchase of a security system.
The new system, which will cost approximately $800,000 and is scheduled for installation starting Oct. 13, will sound an alarm if an infant is moved beyond a designated area. When the alarm is triggered, the unit’s elevator will shut down automatically. Additionally, a security guard will remain posted on the floor.
The baby snatchings that prompted the system installation both involved mothers fleeing with their newborns in an attempt to avoid loosing their parental rights. Shortly after escaping, both were tracked down, and the babies were returned to the hospital unharmed.
