Authorities Find Hidden Cameras in U of Delaware Restrooms

Police have arrested a University of Delaware doctoral student for allegedly placing hidden cameras in campus restrooms over a two-year period.

NEWARK, Del. – Police have arrested a man for placing hidden cameras in University of Delaware restrooms over a two-year period.

Authorities learned about the situation after a hidden camera was discovered in a women’s restroom on June 27, KSL.com reports.

An investigation led police to Javier Mendiola-Soto, a doctoral student from Mexico. The suspect allegedly hid video cameras in two restrooms at the Delaware Biotechnology Institute, including a unisex bathroom and a women’s restroom.

Police also discovered approximately 1,500 computer video files in Mendiola-Soto’s home.

Mendiola-Soto has been charged with 21 counts of violation of privacy. Additionally, his visa has been revoked.

As many as 40 potential victims have been identified so far; however, police do not believe the images have been uploaded to the Internet or shared.

The university is currently offering counseling to victims.
