MADISON, Wis. — The University of Wisconsin System payroll and benefits system is susceptible to breaches due its lack of security, according to an audit released Tuesday.
In its report, the Legislative Audit Bureau noted that the system’s lack of security could lead to unauthorized payments being made, as well as recommended changes the organization can make to increase security and improve its human resources system, The Star Tribune reports.
The UW payroll system processes about 1.2 million checks annually for 75,000 faculty, staff and student employees across the entire university system. It is used to process nearly $2.9 billion in payroll-related expenses annually.
A previous audit determined that UW made $33 million in overpayments through the system between 2011 and 2013. The audit bureau recommended that UW recover the funds by July 1.
UW President Richard Telfer said changes to the system should be implemented by the end of the year. He noted that steps have already been made to increase security, including removing and limiting access to the payroll system for hundreds of users.
