OXNARD, Calif. — E.O. Green Junior High has come under scrutiny during the trial of Brandon McInerney, who shot and killed a gay classmate in 2008. Teachers have testified that they went to administrators about Larry King’s feminine attire and taunting behavior, but their concerns were ignored.
King wore makeup and women’s attire — according to witnesses — and also taunted male students with comments like “I know you want me,” the Los Angeles Times reports. McInerney’s defense attorneys claim that McInerney was driven to shoot King because of taunts like these.
The trial highlights the struggle of protecting the civil rights of gay and transgendered children while addressing the tensions that can occurred between students on campus.
