A woman who was beaten by a fellow patient in 2011 is suing the federal government for negligence.
Lori Coltharp, 38, who is a veteran of the army, was being treated for substance abuse and mental health issues at the Central Alabama Veterans Health Care System when another patient with a history of violence attacked her, reports the Montgomery Adviser.
She claims the VA didn’t provide enough security at the hospital and that it is responsible for her attack.
Coltharp says she is experiencing PTSD, and in 2012, the VA said her condition was related to the beating. It determined VA staff was negligent for allowing her assailant—a suspected violent offender—to participate in the substance abuse program.
