ASU Revises Stun Gun Guidelines

Published: September 22, 2005

Tempe, Ariz., Arizona State University (ASU) is tightening up guidelines on when Taser devices can be used at Sun Devil Stadium events. The new rules will restrict Taser use to what is in line with security measures at other sports venues, such as the University of Arizona in Tucson, Chase Field and the America West Arena.

For campus police to use the device, the revised policy requires there be a physical threat rather than just fans not complying with police commands.

The change was prompted when Tasers were used during a January 2005 incident that occurred after the Fiesta Bowl. There was a standoff between campus police (both armed officers and unarmed security personnel) and approximately 250 Utah fans. Tasers were deployed to keep fans from pushing against a fence. Approximately two dozen were shocked with the stun guns.
