An assistant coach on a Texas high school football team admitted to telling his players to target a referee in a recent game.
Mack Breed, the secondary coach on John Jay High School’s football team, admitted to the San Antonio school’s principal that he ordered his players to hit a referee because the ref had made racist remarks, according to ESPN.
Breed alleged that referee Robert Watts angered him when he used the N-word in the middle of a game on September 4. Breed then told players to “make [Watts] pay for his racial comments.”
A Youtube video of the incident, which can be seen above, went viral and led to the removal of two students from the team. The Northside Independent School District also held disciplinary hearings for the students September 23 to determine if further punishment was necessary.
Watts’ lawyer denied that his client made any racist remarks during the game.
The governing body of Texas high school athletics is expected to hand out punishments to Breed and the school.
