EAST LANSING, Mich. – A man who committed arson against Michigan State University, turned informant for the government, was sentenced to nine years in prison Oct. 20.

Thirty-three-year-old Frank Ambrose, along with three additional people, who were members of the Earth Liberation Front, set fire to the university’s agriculture hall on New Year’s Eve in 1999. It was in protest against genetically modified crops. The fire caused more than $1 million damage.

Ambrose pleaded guilty to conspiring to set a fire. Originally, Ambrose faced 20 years in jail; however, because he was an informant, he only faces nine years.

Ambrose said he accepted full responsibility for his actions. Once he was released from jail, he will be placed on a lifetime of supervisory release. Additionally, he was ordered to pay $3.7 million in restitution to the university and other sites he damaged.
