A man faces one count of child abuse and one count of dangerous drug possession after attempting to kidnap his two-day old child from an Arizona hospital in January.
Mathew Bristol, 33, and his wife attempted to flee Thunderbird Hospital in Glendale with their child after hospital officials discovered the infant had methamphetamine, morphine and marijuana in her bloodstream. Social workers reported the discovery to the Arizona Department of Child Safety and to Bristol and his wife, who then tried to escape the hospital with their newborn daughter, according to azcentral.com.
According to court documents, Bristol wrapped his daughter in a blanket and placed her in a plastic bag in an attempt to sneak her by hospital officials, but the wrist band on the child’s arm notified security systems and locked-down hospital doors. Child safety officials arrived shortly after.
The incident was caught on hospital cameras, which show the child wrapped in a blanket and at risk of suffocation. Police also found meth on Bristol during his arrest.
