Arizona High School Student Takes Own Life on Campus

A Corona del Sol High School senior has died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. No other students were involved.

TEMPE, Ariz. – A student of Corona del Sol High School died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound Tuesday morning.

Marcus Wheeler, 18, shot himself in a breezeway near the gym on the south side of the campus, reports ABC15.

Just before the incident, a school resource officer attempted to persuade the high school senior from taking his own life, the news station reports. The student had posted a message on social media shortly before shooting himself, saying on Twitter,“there is going to be a suicide in the school right now,” reports the Daily Mail. The news source says Wheeler was popular at school, and a track star.

No other students were injured, involved or present, however, the campus was put into lockdown. A short time later, the lockdown was lifted and students were sent home. The state baseball quarter finals have been postponed until Wednesday. Classes will resume on Wednesday.

Counselors and mental health professionals are being made available to students who need support.
