OKLAHOMA CITY—The Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics is concerned with a new fad known as i-Dosing, in which users listen through earphones to a pair of carefully mixed audio streams that some believe may simulate the effects illegal narcotics.
Users can download MP3 files that are often accompanied by kaleidoscopic videos, which simultaneously send a distinct tone to one ear, while the other ear is filled with staticky, white noise, according to the Body Odd Blog on MSNBC.com. As a result, the user is supposed to get a high from the noise.
Some Web sites, such as YouTube, offer free i-Dose sound drugs, which direct users to listen to the music alone in a dark room to increase the hallucinogenic effects.
However, some researchers have denied there is any possibility that someone could experience similar effects to cocaine or ecstasy.
Officials from the Oklahoma Bureau of Narcotics are worried that teens who participate in i-Dosing activities could be more willing to experiment with more harmful drugs. Additionally, many of the i-Dosing sites lure visitors to sites that sell drugs and drug paraphernalia.
