YELLOW SPRINGS, Ohio – Officials at Antioch University announced March 28 that the personal information of at least 70,000 people was compromised when an unauthorized person broke into the school’s computer system three times in 2007.
The system was breached June 9, June 10 and Oct. 11, according to authorities. There is no evidence that any personal information was stolen; however officials are still investigating. Personal information that may have been compromised goes as far back to 1996, and it includes the names, Social Security numbers, payroll documents and academic records for current and former students, applicants and employees.
When university officials became aware of the intrusion, the server was taken offline and the area that made it possible for the intrusion to take place was shut down. The university, which has campuses in Yellow Springs, Ohio; Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, Calif.; Seattle; and Keene, N.H., is currently reviewing computer security to ensure there are no more areas susceptible for a breach.
The school is contacting through the mail those whose information may have been exposed.
