Anonymous Letter Provokes Investigation of University Police

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – An anonymous letter with disturbing allegations against university police has prompted officials at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore to launch an investigation.

Last week, an unidentified person distributed copies of a four-page letter addressed to UMES President Thelma Thompson to parents and other visitors. Among other things, the letter claimed that Police Chief Lawrence Wright discouraged officers from arresting students with marijuana, and accused an unnamed security officer of withholding paychecks from employees who owed him money.

University officials are currently investigating the veracity of the letter as they search for its author.
