OXFORD, England — Oxford University confirmed that a cyberattack disrupted its online security Thursday, just a day after a disruption at Cambridge University’s network. The hacker group Anonymous is claiming responsibility for the attacks.
Oxford officials said hackers gained access to a server owner by the physics department and read a file that contained a password to a database of already published research, Security News Daily reports. The attack is thought to be part of Anonymous’ campaign to attack networks affiliated with or close to the British government to persuade the government to let WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange leave the country unhampered.
However, some sources inside Anonymous said “rogue hackers” were really behind the attack.
