The Alabama Board of Adjustment said no to a $1 million claim from the family of a murdered Auburn University student Wednesday. The action was brought by the family of Lauren Burk, who was an 18-year-old freshman from Marietta, GA. at the time of her 2008 death.
In their claim, the Burk family said the university’s decision to merge its police with the city’s led to inadequate campus security. They also said the goal of their claim was to get Auburn to reinstate its police force. After hearing the decision, the Burk family said they would be continuing their fight for better campus security, according to al.com.
Burk was shot to death by Courtney Lockhart, who confessed to robbing her, forcing her to take off her clothes and attempting to rape her while he drove around in her car. He also said he drove her car back to campus and set it on fire.
Lockhart was sentenced to life without parole by a jury in March 2011, but Lee Country Judge Jacob A. Walker III overrode the decision, issuing a death sentence. Lockhart asked the Alabama Supreme Court to overrule the death penalty decision in May.
