BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Three tornadoes touched down Jan. 23, destroying the public elementary school in Center Point, and destroying or damaging 500 homes and 50 businesses.
The twisters killed two people and injured approximately 100 others, MSNBC reports. Gov. Robert Bentley expressed relief that the students at Center Point Elementary were not on campus at the time of the storm.
The region was alerted to the possibility of severe storms a day ahead of time by forecasters.
