Activist Wants Dallas Schools to Address ‘Cheese’ Problem

Published: April 16, 2008

DALLAS – A community activist says the Dallas Independent School District (DISD) is not doing enough to address the use of “cheese” heroin in the district. As a result, DISD may soon be the target of a class action lawsuit.

These comments were prompted by the suspected March 10 “cheese” overdose of DISD student, Sergio Leija, 18. Community activist Carlos Quintanilla says Dallas schools aren’t properly responding to the concerns of the community about the illegal substance. Quintanilla wants the district to compensate the families of those “under the care of and supervision of DISD” who died as a result of consuming “cheese.”

“Cheese” is a relatively new kind of drug that contains a mixture of black tar Mexican heroin and over-the-counter medicines with antihistamine diphenhydramine, such as Tylenol PM. According to Dallas police, the double-sedative combination kills by slowing down the body until the user’s heart stops. For those who survive, symptoms include lethargy, euphoria, thirst and disorientation.
