NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. — A woman who falsely accused three Duke University lacrosse players of sexual assault has been indicted on a murder charge. Crystal Gail Mangum, 32, allegedly stabbed her boyfriend, Reginald Daye. Daye died on April 13.
Mangum has been held in the Durham County Jail since April 3 following the stabbing, Reuters reports. She originally faced a charge of assault with a deadly weapon.
Daye, who suffered multiple stab wounds to the torso, died at Duke University Hospital. Until an autopsy is performed, the cause of his death is unclear. The delay in his death might complicate the murder prosecution, according to Woody Vann, Mangum’s former attorney in the stabbing case.
In December, Mangum faced felony arson and several other charges related to a domestic dispute. She was convicted of lesser charges and sentenced to the 88 days in jail she had served awaiting trail.
Five years ago her accusations of sexual assault against three Duke lacrosse players drew national attention. She had been hired as a stripper for a team party on March 13, 2006. The accusations were later deemed false after a review led by North Carolina Attorney General Roy Cooper.
