An Appalachian State student was fatally shot on Nov. 22 after an accidental shooting at an off-campus party.

Jay Franklin Derby, 20, was attending a party at apartments 200 yards off campus when a long rifle was discharged. Derby was among seven people at the party, according to the Watauga Democrat.

The Boone Police Department has arrested Eli Ruble, 20, for the shooting. The Winston-Salem Journal reports that Ruble thought he was setting off a percussion cap that would make a pop when he pointed the hunting rifle at Derby. Instead, the gun was loaded. Ruble has been charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Derby was a sophomore majoring in business education.
