9 Los Angeles Schools Will Hire Campus Safety Specialists

Published: September 15, 2008

LOS ANGELES – Nine low-performing schools throughout Los Angeles will have city prosecutors acting as campus safety specialists, according to the Los Angeles Times.

All schools receiving a specialist are located in areas prone to crime. The new program was prompted by the increase in academic scores at Markham Middle School in Watts, Calif. District officials attribute the rise in scores to the decrease of crime in the area.

Part of the program at Markham included the expansion of afterschool activities, distribution of free shoes to students, and the delivery of a washer and dryer to clean school uniforms.
