9 Dead in 5th Chinese School Attack

Published: May 11, 2010

HANZHONG, China—A man with a kitchen cleaver hacked to death seven kindergarten students and one of the school’s two owners in northwest China before returning home and killing himself.

Wednesday’s incident was the fifth attack on school children in the country in the last two months. Wu Huanming, 48, killed five boys and two girls and wounded 11 additional students at a private school in Shaanxi province. Two of the wounded students were said to be in critical condition.

The school was operated by a mother-son duo. The mother died from wounds at a nearby hospital.

Police are not sure what prompted the attack, citing that unlike the attackers from the past three edged-weapon incidents, Wu, who had rented out the rooms for the privately run kindergarten, was neither mentally ill nor poor.
