LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Eight Arkansas State University students were arrested Nov. 5 after a celebration for President-elect Barack Obama turned into a melee near the campus. Three police officers were injured during the incident.
As many as 200 people were gathered at an apartment complex a block away from campus grounds. An off-duty female police officer, who was moonlighting as a security officer for the apartment complex, asked the group to disperse. The officer then called for assistance.
When two on-duty officers arrived at the scene, the crowd responded by throwing rocks and beer bottles at the trio. One man punched the female officer in the face, breaking her nose.
Forty additional officers arrived at the scene after receiving a distress call. One officer suffered a cut to the forehead and another fell to the ground during the brawl.
