6 Suspects in Radioactive Material Theft Case Hospitalized

Published: December 8, 2013

MEXICO CITY – The six suspects in last Monday’s theft of a truck carrying cobalt-60 were hospitalized and tested for possible radiation exposure.

The men, who were arrested Thursday, are believed to have stolen an obsolete medical machine that was formerly used in a Mexican hospital to treat cancer patients. Two of the men were brought in on Thursday and were experiencing vomiting, nausea and dizziness, reports ENCA.com. The other four suspects were brought in hours later. None of the suspects’ conditions were considered serious.

The theft of the radioactive material triggered alerts in Mexico. International notifications were also issued due to the possibility that the material could be used in a dirty bomb, reports the Boston Globe.

While the six men were being treated, Mexican Federal police blocked access to the hospital.
