6 Calif. Schools to Receive $1M for Pedestrian Safety Improvements

Published: February 24, 2011

GLENDALE, Calif. — Six schools will receive $1 million in pedestrian safety improvements in a construction project that was approved by the City Council on Feb. 22. The project will be funded by a $900,000 state grant for the Safe Routes to School program and approximately $100,000 in local transportation funds.

Balboa, Columbus, Dunsmore, R.D. White and Verdugo Woodlands elementary schools and Wilson Middle School will undergo improvements including curb extensions and more visible crosswalk markings, the Glendale News-Press reports. The new improvements will offer students safer and more frequent crossing options.

The majority of the Safe Routes to School grant will support infrastructure improvements. However, some of the funding will be designated for education and enforcement measures, as well as bike racks.

Construction will begin in August and is expected to take two months.
