The article Background Checks: Another Important Layer of K-12 Campus Security describes how the background checks of job applicants and school volunteers can improve campus security and protect campuses from lawsuits. Check out what these background checks can dig up:
- The screening process often uncovers lies or buildups on resumes or applications. That might include degrees, certifications, ongoing education, jobs held, titles and responsibilities. According to one screening services firm, 88 percent of all employers report uncovering deception through background checks.
- Employers are required by federal law to verify employment eligibility, known as I-9 process. A background check can determine that an applicant is legally residing in the U.S.
- Sexual offenders are required to register in the state in which they committed a crime involving a minor. Checking against a national database is vital as registered offenders often move. There are currently more than 700,000 registered sex offenders in the U.S.
- If employees or volunteers will be involved in fundraising or other activities requiring handling money, a more in-depth background check, even a credit check, might also be wise. Be sure to follow the federal Fair Credit Reporting Act.
