WASHINGTON – As many as 1,000 patients at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and other military hospitals were victims of a data breach where their personal information, including Social Security numbers, birth dates and names, were exposed.
While details of the incident are limited, officials for Walter Reed said the breach was discovered on May 21 by an unidentified data mining company. According to officials, the company found an exposed file while working on another assignment and contacted the hospital.
A toll-free hotline has been set up for patients to establish whether or not they were affected. Those who have been affected will be provided with a credit monitoring service.
