Two students and a staff member were shot at Florida State University’s (FSU) Strozier Library early Thursday morning by a lone gunman, who was then killed by FSU police. Two of the injured, one in critical condition and one in good condition, are at Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare, while the third victim was treated and released at the scene.

The gunman, whose name hasn’t been released, entered the library with a handgun at 12:30 a.m., according to the police. After shots were fired, he was confronted by Tallahassee and FSU police near the front of the library, who told him to give up his weapon. Instead, he fired on them and then was killed by officers in the return fire. FSU police were on the scene in minutes, according to the Tallahassee Democrat.

At the time of the shooting, there were between 300-400 students in the library, according to the FSU police department. Classes and exams have been canceled at the school Thursday, but the university is open and available for counseling for students affected by the shooting.

“Florida State University and Tallahassee police departments have done an extraordinary job taking quick and decisive action to prevent further tragedy, to secure the scene and to keep campus safe,” said FSU President John Thrasher in a statement. “They have assured me that there is no further threat. We are increasing security measures and providing a strong law enforcement presence on and around campus today. I have great confidence in the abilities of our local law enforcement agencies to handle this matter.”
