300 Security Cameras Help Nab Thieves at Marquette U.

Published: March 18, 2008

MILWAUKEE – Students at Marquette University have the school’s high-tech security to thank for catching five suspects immediately after an armed robbery occurred on the campus.

The robbery took place on the morning of March 14 and was the sixth attempt in the past two weeks. The armed assailants are suspected of holding up a student and demanding his wallet, cash and cell phone. They then fled the scene.

The victim quickly contacted campus police, and immediately squad cars were on the streets. Officers reviewed their video surveillance. Police were able to easily nab the suspects because there are 300 security cameras surrounding the neighborhood around the university.

According to campus police chief Larry Rickard, the cameras allow officers to read license plates, which aided officials when capturing the suspects, whose ages range from 16 to 20.

While students are grateful for the cameras, they also believe more security officials need to be hired for additional protection.
