HARRIS COUNTY, Texas—Three people were shot at Lone Star Community College and one other individual required medical attention as a result of the shooting.
The incident happened after 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday in a courtyard between an academic building and the library. Two persons of interest have been detained, including Carlton Berry, 22, who was charged late Tuesday with aggravated assault. Possibly one of them was on the loose but then went to the hospital for treatment. The shooting resulted from a dispute between Berry and another male. Berry remains in the hospital.
Immediately after the shooting, the campus was put on lockdown, but students were allowed to leave. Many, however, were unable to get to their vehicles for several hours. Elementary schools in the area were also on lockdown.
According to a college spokesperson and a local law enforcement official, Lone Star Community College police officers were on the scene instantly, and officers from surrounding jurisdictions arrived two minutes after they received the call. Tactical units searched the scene. EMS faculty at the school provided medical assistance to the alleged gunmen and victims.
It is believed four people were involved. Both the original gunman and his intended victim were shot, although there appears to be only one handgun involved. A male custodian was also hit by gunfire. The fourth individual, a female student, required medical attention after the shooting.
One of the persons of interest appears to be a student at the school.
Recently, the campus had gone through three trainings involving scenarios much like the one that happened today.
Emergency notifications were sent via opt-out texts, E-mail and loudspeaker announcements, although some students complained that they did not receive any notifications regarding what was happening.
Police officials say the campus has been cleared, and classes will resume tomorrow.
