SAN FRANCISCO — Students in bathing suits disrupted a University of California Board of Regents meeting Thursday by playing music and dancing on chairs to demand more transparency in state funding talks and protest tuition hikes. Three students were arrested following the meeting.
The students used the public comments section of the meeting, which was held at UC San Francisco, to question UC President Mark Yudof’s tax initiative and criticize the Regents for scheduling the meeting during spring break, the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Board Chairwoman Sherry Lansing ended the comments period before everyone on the speakers’ list had spoken, prompting students to begin a call-and-response chant.
As Regents, chancellors and staff members exited the room, students began to dance on chairs, declaring that they were on spring break and should act accordingly, The Bottom Line reports. UCPD officers in riot gear declared the gathering an unlawful assembly and removed a crowd of 40 to 50 people from the room.
