Police have arrested a suspect in a shooting that killed two university freshmen on April 10 in Louisiana.
The victims, 19-year-olds Annette January and Lashuntae Benton, were students at Southern University and were reportedly caught in the crossfire of a gunfight between two men, The Advocate reports.
Ernest Bernard Felton, 22, was arrested by Baton Rouge police on the same day as the shooting and charged with attempted second-degree murder and illegal use of a weapon. Felton, a former student at Southern, has not been officially linked to the murders.
The shooting occurred at a party just after 2 a.m. Sunday morning at an apartment complex near LSU’s campus. Police say Brandon Henderson, 24, pulled up at the complex and began shooting at Felton following an earlier dispute between the two men.
Henderson was shot in the leg and torso during the shootout and drove to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. Henderson’s Chevrolet Cobals was reportedly covered in bullet holes.
Baton Rouge police are conducting a ballistic missile test to determine which shooter was responsible for the student’s deaths.
Both victims were described as caring, smart and athletic people who had bright futures.
“Everybody’s hearts are broken,” Southern junior Janae Williams said. “Even people who don’t really know them, they’re really heartbroken that this happened in our community and to our students – successful students.”
