Texas police killed two gunmen who shot at officers outside of a “Draw Muhammad” contest being held at a school May 3.

Police in Garland, Texas, said they killed two gunmen who drove up to a school entrance and opened fire with assault rifles, hitting a school security guard in the leg. The school was hosting an event put on by the American Freedom Defense Initiative, which has been labeled as a hate group. The event asked participants to draw the Muslim prophet Muhammad for a cash reward. Images depicting Muhammad are considered blasphemy by Muslims around the world.

There had been calls to move the event, which about 200 people attended, somewhere other than a school, but the Garland Independent School District said it could not discriminate based on viewpoints, according to nbcnews.com.

Federal law enforcement officials identified one suspect as Elton Simpson, who’s been convicted of lying to federal agents about plans to join a terror group in Africa. The second suspect’s identity has not been released.
