22 No. Illinois U. Fraternity Members Face Charges in Pledge Death

Published: December 17, 2012

DEKALB, Ill. – Five members of the Northern Illinois University (NIU) chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha have been charged with Class 4 felony hazing while 17 others have been charged with misdemeanor hazing.

The charges, which were filed Monday, are related to the Nov. 2 death of David Bogenberger, 19, reports the Associated Press. The night before his death, he had been drinking at a party thrown by the fraternity, and toxicology tests showed his blood-alcohol concentration was about five times the legal limit for driving.

The cause of Bogenberger’s death was determined to be cardiac arrhythmia, with alcohol intoxication as a contributing cause. Other pledges also reported becoming sick after drinking heavily.

Additionally, 31 NIU students face disciplinary actions for violating the school’s code of conduct.
