202,000 Letters Sent By Blue Shield of Georgia Sent to the Wrong People

ATLANTA – More than 200,000 people who use Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Georgia, the largest health insurance provider in Georgia, received letters containing the personal and health information of other clients with the company.

Blue Cross and Blue Shied sent 202,000 clients Explanation of Benefits (EOB) letters containing patient names, ID numbers and in some cases, Social Security numbers.

Officials said the problem occurred due to a computer error. The problem is being fixed, officials said, to prevent the error from happening again. The insurance company is compiling a list of names of individuals who mistakenly received the wrong information.
